Building affordable homes

A plan for affordability

We’re investing $7 billion over 10 years into the homes and housing supports that people need, in every corner of the province. This is the biggest investment in housing affordability in B.C. history. There are thousands of affordable homes already in development today, with tens of thousands more to come, as we work with our partners to deliver 114,000 affordable homes.

114,000 new affordable homes

We will work with partners in the public and private sector to deliver 114,000 new, affordable homes over the next ten years. This housing will fill current gaps in the market, including homes for growing families, homes for seniors and homes for students.

Addressing the missing middle

Middle income people across British Columbia are struggling to find housing. Recognizing historically low vacancy rates and historically high housing prices we are investing $378 million over the next three years to build more than 14,000 rental homes for middle income families.

Homes for women and children fleeing violence

We are significantly increasing access to transition housing for women and children fleeing violence for the first time in two decades. This $141 million investment over the next three years will give families a safe, secure place to live and the support they need to heal from abuse.

Investing in student housing

Together with colleges, universities and technical institutes we will be delivering up to 8000 new homes for students on campus, so the bright minds of tomorrow can focus on their studies instead of struggling to find housing - freeing up rentals in communities across the province.

Partnering for affordability with the HousingHub

We are creating a new HousingHub that will bring together the non-profit sector, faith groups, for-profit builders, all levels of government and others to find and develop or re-develop available land and buildings to create affordable homes for people.

Working with Indigenous communities to build affordable homes

Indigenous British Columbians are disproportionately under-housed in B.C. As part of our commitment to reconciliation we will work closely with First Nations and Indigenous housing societies to develop and deliver 1,750 new homes for Indigenous families.
